Teapot Making Course

Teapot Making Course (Intermediate Level)Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th July 202610am–4pm
This two-day, hands-on course is designed for intermediate potters who are confident with the basics of wheel throwing and ready to take on more complex forms. You should be able to centre clay and comfortably throw at least 600g. Working in a small, supportive group, you’ll have your own wheel for the duration of the course, with plenty of opportunity for focused practice and individual guidance throughout.

By the end of the course, you will have created your own teapot, along with any additional components or related forms. Your work will be glazed and fired for you in a glaze of your choice, or you are welcome to book a drop-in session at the studio to glaze it yourself. Finished pieces will be ready to collect approximately 6 weeks later (or can be posted by arrangement).

Each day includes a vegetarian lunch, as well as tea and coffee, so you can settle in, focus on making, and enjoy the process at a relaxed pace.

Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th July 202610am-4pm

Raku Day Course
Raku Sundays at Common Clay2nd, 9th & 23rd August 2026
Book here
Experience the excitement of Raku — a fast-paced, expressive ceramic firing technique rooted in Japanese tradition. This process involves removing glowing hot pots from the kiln and placing them into combustible materials, creating rich, smoky surfaces and beautifully unpredictable results.
These sessions are led by artist Katalina Caliendo, who will guide you through both making and firing processes, introducing a range of alternative and experimental firing approaches alongside traditional Raku.
This includes demonstrations and opportunities to explore Obvara firing and the use of a variety of combustible materials including horsehair and feathers, alongside a selection of Raku glazes designed to create bold and dynamic surface effects.
This August, the programme is split across making and firing sessions:
Sunday 2nd August – Making Session
11am - 1.30pm
This session is dedicated to creating work for Raku firing. You’ll be guided through making simple, effective hand-built forms in clay that respond well to the Raku process. Your pieces will be dried and bisque fired by the studio, ready for firing in a later session.

Sundays 9th & 23rd August – Raku Firing Sessions
10am - 4pm
These sessions focus on glazing and firing. You’ll be guided through the full Raku process, from surface decoration through to firing in our outdoor kiln. Your tutor will share techniques to help you achieve striking results, while also encouraging experimentation and chance — a key part of Raku and related alternative firing methods.
Book here
You can bring your own bisque-fired pots, use pieces made during the August 1 session, or purchase bisque ware from the studio. With small group sizes (maximum 6 participants), there is plenty of opportunity for individual guidance throughout the day.We aim to fire as much work as possible, but please allow for up to four pieces per person during firing sessions.
What’s included: All materials, a range of Raku glazes, combustables, firing, tools, apron, gloves, and refreshments (tea & coffee) & a simple vegetarian lunch on firing days.
Key information: Outdoor firing (weather dependent)
Maximum pot size: 20 x 20 x 20 cm. Suitable for all levels

8 - 11 years: 10am - 12pm book here
12–16 years: 1pm – 3pm book here

Our Summer Clay Club is a series of fun, hands-on sessions where young people can make, experiment, and get creative in a relaxed, welcoming studio.

Across the three Tuesdays, we’ll explore a range of techniques — from hand-building and sculpting to surface decoration — with dedicated time on the pottery wheel each session. This is a great chance to try wheel throwing, with plenty of guidance to help build confidence and skills.

You’re welcome to book a single session or join us for all three.

Sessions are tailored to each age group, with projects designed to be engaging, achievable, and open-ended. All levels are welcome — no experience needed.

Alongside the making, we prioritise a calm, supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable and included. Sessions are led by experienced artist facilitators, with small group sizes to ensure each participant gets plenty of guidance, including one-to-one support on the pottery wheel.

Participants will create a range of pieces across the sessions. Work will be carefully dried and fired by the studio, ready for collection at a later date.Book here

Optional full-day add-on: Kids Woodwork at Do Your Ideas

We will also supervise a lunch break and time to run around in our yard between sessions for anyone staying for the full day.

Common Clay has partnered with Working Class Creative Database to offer two 6 month residencies to WCCD members based in East Sussex.

Common Clay is an artist-led ceramics studio in Bexhill-on-sea, set up to provide a shared, open and experimental making space for a community of artists working with clay, alongside a programme of workshops, classes, social events and exhibitions.

We are offering two artists from low socio-economic backgrounds a 6-month residency at Common Clay. This residency aims to provide artists who have limited access to ceramic facilities the opportunity to experiment with clay and engage in dialogue with studio members, visiting artists, and curators to potentially activate new ideas in their work. The residency is open to artists looking to reconnect with the making process, be more playful and experimental in their practice, and who would benefit from joining a creative community. While some ceramics experience is required, artists from all backgrounds are welcome to apply.

The residency provides:
- access to the Common Clay studio one day per week for 6 months

- technical guidance throughout plus one studio induction session and additional tuition if required

- studio visits and professional development with established artists and curators

- 1300sqft shared workspace

- regular kiln firings 1000-1240c

- use of equipment e.g wheels, slab roller, extruder, tools

- access to glazes, slips, oxides, stains etc

- all materials and firing costs

- exhibition/event opportunities

- opportunities to get involved in the community programme

Requirements:
- identify as an artist from a working class background

- be a WCCD member (you can become a member for free here) Feel free to apply for the residency before hearing back from WCCD

- some experience in ceramics

- able to commit to one day per week at the studio (Wednesday-Friday)

- East Sussex based and able to travel to Bexhill

Please be aware that we are a small Community Interest Company with very occasional public funding. Unfortunately we are unable to offer travel or childcare costs etc.

Visit the Studio - Saturday 20th April 12-2pm
We invite you to visit Common Clay where you can view the studio, ask questions, meet other artist members, and have an informal chat about the residency opportunity. Tea and coffee will be available.

Common Clay × Ruup & Form
Collect Art Fair 2026 - 25th February - 1st March
We’re so excited to share that Common Clay has collaborated with Ruup & Form to present a wall of ceramic sconces at Collect Art Fair this year.

Presented as a single, collective installation, the work brings together a constellation of candle-lit ceramics, each designed by a different artist working at the Common Clay studio. It’s a celebration of collective making, rooted in the everyday exchange of skills, ideas and materials.

We’re incredibly grateful to Ruup & Form and Collect for creating space for our community ceramics studio within such a prestigious contemporary art fair. This highlights not only the quality of work that emerges from community spaces, but also the importance of collective making.

Shown within Ruup & Form’s theme The Grammar of Connection, the installation explores mutualism as a way of working — many hands, one shared gesture, and a whole lot of light.

Artists include -

Agata Bogacka, Carla Wright, Charlie Brookes, Jae Bond, Jasmine Lapper-Goodrum, Jonathan Murphy, Katie Boccacini-Meadows, Kirsty Leake,
Lucy Laura Scott, Mary Cornes, Michelle O’Connor, Pip Johnson, Rhiannon Inman-Simpson, Richard Phoenix, RJ Fernandez, Rosalind Faram,

Residencies 2025 Exhibition

An exhibition by Tanvi Kant & RJ Fernandez
13 September - 15 November 2025

Common Clay is proud to present an exhibition of work by artists Tanvi Kant and RJ Fernandez, created during their eight-month residencies as part of our partnership with the Working Class Creative Database (WCCD).

Launched in 2024, the Common Clay x WCCD Residency supports artists from low socio-economic backgrounds, offering time, space, and access to specialist ceramic facilities in East Sussex. This initiative aims to foster experimentation, play, and material exploration for artists who may otherwise face barriers to working with clay.

Through ongoing dialogue with studio members, visiting artists, and curators, the residency invites artists to reconnect with making, test new ideas, and deepen their practices within a supportive and collaborative studio environment.

This exhibition marks the culmination of Tanvi and RJ’s residencies, reflecting their evolving practices and the ethos of Common Clay as a space for exploration, dialogue, and community.

We celebrate their continued connection to Common Clay as permanent members and the distinct perspectives and joy they bring to the studio.

‘All Our Own Work’
We’ve been holding lovely Saturday morning supported sessions over the last year with six makers who have access needs at Common Clay. This exhibition is a showcase of All Our Own Work, fed by mutual inspiration, support, tea and biscuits. These sessions were fully funded by Arts Council England, which enabled all of the makers to build on their experience with us and the materials.

Residencies 2024–25 Exhibition

〰 Evocative Assemblages 〰

by Katalina Caliendo & Joan Glasgow Ashton

An exhibition by two of our residency artists, showcasing work made during their time at Common Clay.

Katalina Caliendo continued her exploration of world-making, with a focus on caregiving. Drawing on her experiences of mothering and maternal connection, and interweaving motifs from the natural landscape, she uses accumulations and beads as metaphors for the sensorial, fluid, and indeterminate aspects of care. Her work brings together her own voice with those of her community. Katalina shares pieces made both at Common Clay and from her time working at home in the early stages of motherhood.

Joan Glasgow Ashton’s ceramic work, created during her residency, holds the imprint of shared memory. Through clay, she explores belonging— shaping forms that reflect both personal and collective histories. In the studio, making became a way to remember, to connect, and to care. Hands worked together, stories surfaced, and a sense of community took form. Her vessels speak of accumulation and transformation, emerging from a kind of clay circle where the act of sharing became the space of change.

“All that you touch, you change.

All that you change, changes you.

The only lasting truth is change.” — Octavia Butler

The works presented will span across painting, sculpture, video, and physical experience, using these varied mechanisms of story-telling to present what Bexhill-on-sea has to offer as a place for art and artists. Ideas of local people and communities, their agency and relationships to the space around them, are the themes that bind these works together.

We will be hosting a public opening event on Saturday 22nd February from 14:30 - 17:00, all are welcome, our gallery is flat, plus we have accessible toilets.

This exhibition has been developed in partnership with Talent Accelerator (De La Warr Pavilion) and Common Clay, supported through essential funds from Arts Council England, and our vital core funding from Rother District Council.

Carla Wright
The Fuddling Gossips
15 February—13 April 2025
At VOLT, Devonshire Collective

The Fuddling Gossips by artist Carla Wright will be an exhibition of new works that engage with gossip as a form of connection, inspired by social spaces of youth and shared studios as sites of communal making, thinking and doing.
With a practice that centres the process of working with ceramics as material and research, the gallery will become host to a series of works that consider function, form and design as a means to invite participation and share knowledge.Exhibition Opening: Saturday 15 February 2024, 2 - 4pm. Free, all welcome.Carla Wright is an artist living and working in East Sussex. She makes ceramic sculptures & wall-based works that explore community architecture & places of gathering in predominantly working class neighbourhoods, centred around public spaces - communal buildings and playgrounds.Motifs and fragments of modernist climbing frames, concrete stepping stones & references to community centre murals appear throughout the work. Her practice is informed by growing up around this type of architecture and responding through ceramic ‘drawings’ and sculptural assemblages - interconnecting grouping of objects, supporting, interacting and playing with each other.

“Crooked evening of the rites of last snow for good luck for one and all”
As part of Bexhill After Dark 2025, Common Clay presents an installation by Agata Bogacka - 25th January
Taking over the windows of CMC Barbers, Agata has created the installation “Crooked evening of the rites of last snow for good luck for one and all”
This installation is a personal reflection on an ancient Slavic tradition of celebrating the days getting longer, and chasing the winter hibernation away before arrival of the spring.
The Koleda/ Misie/Dziady rites are celebrated between winter solstice until the end of the carnival season at the beginning of February. Groups of people are getting dressed as ancient spirits. Angels, bears, chimney sweeps and horses are performing loud dances to bring good luck and chase the winter away.

Cobalt by Katie Boccaccini Meadows

Next up at the Common Clay Project Space is ‘Cobalt’ - an exhibition of new ceramics by our very own artist member Katie Boccaccini Meadows. Please join us this Friday evening for the opening event with complimentary natural wine - Friday 19th July 5.30 - 8pm.Drawing on the rich historical importance of ceramics to global culture and trade, Katie Boccaccini Meadows creates sculptural and functional objects which are both playful and expertly crafted. Thrown on the wheel then assembled, her forms are derived from influences across multiple ceramic traditions.
For this exhibition Meadows is interested in the historical importance of cobalt oxide in the decoration of ceramics and how its use has embodied iconic design styles across cultures, beginning in 14th century China through to the present day.Exhibition continues 20th July - 31st August Wed-Fri or by appointment.

Common Clay is pleased to present an exhibition of ceramic wall pieces and plates by Amy Fenton, made during fortnightly sessions at Common Clay studio.

Amy likes to follow a line, a mark, a shadow of her own hand, so together we developed a way for Amy to respond to her own marks through layering. Carved marks, followed by painted slips, fired, applied glazes, drawn marks with underglaze pencils, fired, and often glazed again.

“Amy has lifelong neurological conditions that over the years have caused almost complete memory loss and significant cognitive impairment. Working with Carla at Common Clay has enabled Amy’s creativity to emerge alongside being in an environment where her own particular language is appreciated.” Jill Fenton (Amy’s mum)

Amy is an artist at Project Art Works, recent exhibitions include Towner International 2022 at Towner Gallery, Eastbourne, a group show at Untitled Gallery, Hastings 2023, and Coastal Currents at Project Art Works studio, Hastings, 2022.

A leaf a gourd a shell a net a bag a sling a sack a bottle a pot a box a container. A holder. A recipient.

Science fiction writer Ursula K Le Guin’s essay ‘The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction’ posits the idea that, before the spear, we had the pot. Before we made weapons to attack, we made tools to gather. It was in this act of gathering – seeds and oats and nuts and berries – and of gathering together that our human culture was formed. We gathered to tell and hear stories, to exchange knowledge – although the stories that have been immortalised are those of the big, strong, Ape Man hunter with his big stick energy. In fact, Le Guin writes, ‘Before the tool that forces energy outward, we made the tool that brings energy home.’ It is no coincidence that the name for these energy-holders is receptacle. To receive.

It is a human thing to do to put something you want, because it’s useful, edible, or beautiful, into a bag, or a basket, or a bit of rolled bark or leaf, or a net woven of your own hair, or what have you, and then take it home with you, home being another, larger kind of pouch or bag, a container for people, and then later on you take it out and eat it or share it or store it up for winter in a solider container or put it in the medicine bundle or the shrine or the museum, the holy place, the area that contains what is sacred.

Common Clay is a container for people. Like a velvet pouch of Scrabble tiles, the studio receives in people and lumps of clay like small nuggets of knowledge, provides a place for them to gather and build and mould with one another, and then offers this knowledge back into the world as a gift. In the first instance, skills are gifted, both through structured classes and more informal, spontaneous cooperation. Yet the results, the ceramic objects, are also gifted: most of the members eat and drink from things that others have made in the studio. These receptacles are often holders of further gifts – a cup of tea made for a friend, a bowl of soup for an ill family member, a pot to hold a plant giving oxygen. To give is to receive.

In a 2019 interview, the feminist theorist Donna Haraway says that reality is ‘a matter of testing the holdingness of things. Do things hold or not?’ Our reality as humans, as kin, has always been to make objects that hold our stories, and to find others to receive them.

Gathering Container is an exhibition of work by Common Clay studio members, invited to Flatland Projects for Flatland’s first anniversary show. The exhibition is supported by Arts Council England.

As part of Art Licks Weekend 2019, Common Clay – a Hastings-based ceramics studio – present Common Ware, an exhibition at PEER showcasing ceramic multiples made by members and associates of the studio alongside an immersive sound piece and daily artist led workshops.

Nine artists have made a ceramic work in multiples of fifteen, designed for everyday use. To unify this collection of works, and to reflect the creative community central to their collective philosophy, each artist has considered the importance of self-care in the everyday and the therapeutic quality of working with clay. This thinking process is the means by which the handmade ceramic objects have been created. Ambient electronic sound work by noch emanating from a ceramic vessel further creates a reflective space for visitors to view the works and engage with the material.

Each day of the exhibition there were free drop-in workshops led by a participating artist for members of the public to join in with. Each workshop revolved around creating things with clay and encouraged participants to explore mindfulness, sensations and personal hopes.

The multiple artworks, which at the end of the exhibition was packed into wooden boxes, were exchanged between the artists as a gesture of communal making and sharing, an extension of Common Clay’s ethos. The remaining six boxes are available for sale to help fund future projects by the ceramics studio.
